Concern about failure

Most of us have doubts from time to time. Sometimes those doubts cause us to feel like we are going to fail and we should just stop trying. I periodically go through these myself. I start looking at the bills and think “my idea hasn’t paid off yet – what do I do? Will I be able to keep my lifestyle?” Or at the lowest times, I ask “How long until I am living in a box?”

After all of these years I have become convinced this is a part of the trade off. As one of the people that makes money online – but not millions – I would say that some of the downside is this trade off for a bit of anxiety.

If you find that you are in that space right now, it might help to seriously take stock. I don’t advocate ignoring something that may be a real problem. I start to panic about 60 days out. When I look at all of the expenses and know that I can’t meet my obligation at 45-60 days, I worry about where that’s coming from. You will know your own comfort level.

Freelance work for all

Gone are the days when the home based worker was the anomaly. Now, the vast majority of businesses allow at least some work from home options. This is opening up the freelance workforce to more and more possibilities.

A freelancer can be anything. Basically, this is someone that works independently either as a business or an individual to generate income without the traditional employee/employer relationship.

Who can freelance?

IT professionals. You name it, it has been tried in IT. From database administrators to cabling installers and testers, IT folks have the freelance idea down.
Social media and online marketers. This is a pretty simple relationship.
Data entry and clerical work. I also keep hearing about people that do surveys, but I’ve never found this to me a solid income myself.

Basically, a lot of businesses today are freelance even though we don’t commonly think of them this way. How about the local plumber or heating/air guy? The one that doesn’t have a formal company structure, retired from the industry years ago, and does work on the side? That person is technically a freelancer.

Creating your own home business

Before you begin spending time on a home business or any business for that matter, you need to decide what is motivating you. If the answer to that question is money for nothing or get paid while I watch the game (or soaps or whatever) on tv then you might want to change your thinking that any business is right for you.

Not that you can’t make money with a home business – and some of them have an easier time schedule than most – but you don’t get anything for free.

Take this blog, for example. It’s my 5th blog and the other 4 are producing income in different niches. This is my current strategy with this blog.

Traffic. Some bought, highly targetted, and keep a steady stream of it.
Keywords. I researched keywords looking for words that fall within my established keyword parameters (more on that in a separate blog post)
Backlinks. Creating backlinks will help to increase my ranking and get me more organic traffic.
Stay on topic.
Write an article every day or so.

None of this just “happens”. It takes planning and time.
